THE 2008 MERIDEN/WALLINGFORD SCRABBLE CHALLENGE

When: March 4th, 2008

Where: Chevrolet Theatre, 95 South Turnpike Rd, Wallingford, CT
Need Directions? Click here!

Time: 5:30 – 8:00 pm

What is the Scrabble Challenge?
It’s a fun way to spend time with friends, family and colleagues, while supporting Literacy Volunteer tutors and the goal of 100% literacy in our community.  It begins at 5:30 pm with a casual dinner, followed by a 30-minute Scrabble competition played by four-person teams.  Each four-person team competes in one of three categories; the Town Challenge, the Friends and Family Challenge or the Student Challenge.

After the 30-minute competition, the board scores are counted by the Judges, desert is served and raffle winners are drawn.  The evening concludes with the announcement of the winners in each category.

How do you play Scrabble in a 4-person team?
This is not your average game of Scrabble!  Teams of four make decisions together to build the highest point board possible.  Each team starts with the same 100 tiles facing up and is given the same word to start the board with.  It is then up to the team to strategize and create their board.  Each team is allowed to purchase up to 5 additional tiles, which cost the equivalent of the tile’s point value (for example, an A is one point, so it cost one dollar).  Each of the 5 tiles purchased must be a different letter. Your team has 30 minutes to create your board.
Click here to see the complete rules of the Scrabble Challenge!

How are the winners chosen?
Every team decides which category they are playing in and includes that on their Score Sheet along with their names. Categories are:

TOWN TEAM—WALLINGFORD:
Players who represent the Town of Wallingford and are competing in the Town Challenge
TOWN TEAM—MERIDEN:
Players who represent the City of Meriden and are competing in the Town Challenge
FRIENDS & FAMILY TEAM:
Players who are playing with friends & family and are competing in the Friends
and Family Challenge
STUDENTS TEAM:
Players from local schools who are competing in the Student Challenge

Score sheets are carefully checked by the Judges and the team with the highest number of points in each category is declared the winner. The winner of the Town Challenge is determined by adding the 5 highest scores from Wallingford and the 5 highest from Meriden. The highest score overall is the winner. If there are less than 5 teams from a town, the Judges will add whatever scores are available from that town.  The winners in the Friends & Family category and the Students category will be the teams with the highest score.

Where do the proceeds from the event go?
Literacy Volunteers uses all the proceeds from the fundraiser to support literacy programs for adults in the Meriden and Wallingford areas.  Funds are used to purchase resource materials for tutors and students, to support supplemental tutor workshops and to promote our services in the community.
