THE 2008 MERIDEN/WALLINGFORD SCRABBLE CHALLENGE

When: March 4th, 2008

Where: Chevrolet Theatre, 95 South Turnpike Rd, Wallingford, CT
Need Directions? Click here!

Time: 5:30 – 8:00 pm

Official Rules

Each table should have 4 players, one bag of 100 Scrabble tiles, one Scrabble board, a Score Sheet and pencils. The goal is to work together as a Team to create the Scrabble board with the highest score possible (and to have a lot of fun doing it!)  Get started by turning all 100 tiles upright on the table.

Each team must decide which category they are playing in and include that on their Score Sheet along with their names. Categories are:

TOWN TEAM—WALLINGFORD
players who represent the Town of Wallingford and are competing for the Town Trophy

TOWN TEAM----MERIDEN
players who represent the City of Meriden and are competing for the Town Trophy

FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS TEAM
players who are playing with friends & neighbors and are competing for the Friends Prize

STUDENTS TEAM
players from local schools who are competing for the Student Prize

Play begins when the Judges says START!  Each team will start with the same word, which will be announced by the Judge. The word must be played horizontally across the center of the Board.

All words must be placed either horizontally or vertically. Record each word you create on your score sheet, along with the points

Blank tiles can be used as any letter.

Each table has the option of buying 5 additional tiles to use on their Board. The tiles must be 5 different letters. The price/tile is the same as its value.

All words must appear in the official Scrabble Players Dictionary. If you are unsure of your word, you may pay the Judge $5 to look up the word.

Play ends when the Judge says STOP! Please total your word score and give your Score Sheet to a Judge.

Winners will be announced after the Judges verify the accuracy of the words used and the word scores.

The winner of the Town Trophy will be determined by adding the 5 highest scores from Wallingford and the 5 highest from Meriden. The highest score overall is the winner. If there are less than 5 teams from a town, the Judges will add whatever scores are available from that town.

The winners in the Friends & Family category and the Students category will be the team with the highest score.
