A MESSAGE FROM MARY KESSLER
President of the Literacy Volunteers Board of Directors

Dear Friends of Literacy,

This year we celebrated the Silver Anniversary of Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven. Over the past 25 years, our tutors have touched the lives of hundreds of individuals giving them the gift of literacy. This gift translates into hundreds more gifts as our successful students have shared their gift with an entire generation.

Now our tutors are faced with the ever increasing challenge of teaching non-English speaking students, not only to read, but to speak and understand English. Our amazing staff, under the direction of Doss Venema, has embraced this challenge. They have recruited and trained a record breaking number of talented tutors. Realizing that the only way for our ever swelling international population to be incorporated into all aspects of our society is to be able to communicate effectively, we have added English as a Second Language programs to complement our basic literacy skills program.

I have been honored to be able to serve these extraordinary tutors and students as President of Literacy Volunteers. I am constantly encouraged by the determination of our students to realize their potential through literacy, I am in awe of the tutors who devote so much of their time to this daunting task, and I am grateful to Doss, her staff and the board of directors for their resolve to grow Literacy Volunteers to meet the needs of the Greater New Haven area.

Sincerely,

Mary K. Kessler
President
