SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT: Expressions of Quantity

(a) All of my work is finished. All of + singular noun + singular verb.
(b) All of my friends are kind. All of + plural noun + plural verb.
(c) Some of my homework is finished. Some of + singular noun + singular verb.
(d) Some of my friends are in New York. Some of + plural noun + plural verb.
(e) My aunt and uncle live in Branford. Two subjects connected by and take a plural verb.
(f) Every student is present today. Every is a singular word.  It takes a singular verb.
(g) People in my town are friendly. People is a plural noun.  It takes a plural verb.

Exercise: Choose the correct verb.

1. All of that money    (is, are)  mine.

2. All of the windows    (is, are)   open.

3. My mother    (speak, speaks)   Spanish.

4. Most of the students   arrive, arrives   on time.

5. Joe and Carol   (has, have)   many art books.

A symbol is a sign that stands for an object or an idea.  All words are symbols, and pictures can be symbols.  Here are two sets of symbols; the first set consists of animal names that are used as symbols; the second set consists of some commonly used symbols..  Match the symbols with what they stand for.

IT’S ABOUT TIME

You may remember a previous Lesson Links page that included a discussion of prepositions.  This exercise focuses on prepositions of time: in, on, and at.

Exercise: Complete the sentences with in, at, or on.  All the sentences contain time expressions.
